In 1986, Mr. Bright Oppong Twumasi, then owner and founder of Oppong Twumasi Electricals Company (OTEC) commenced with the building of a radio transmitter at Krofrom CPC in Kumasi.
In 1990, he was done with the transmitter but then Head of State of the Republic of Ghana, Flt. Lt. Jerry John Rawlings ordered that all private owned radio stations to hold on with its operations in respect of conceived idea to establish a private radio station.
In 1994, a court ruling was announced which opened the doors for private radio stations to operate, there are far more of these in Ghana than state-owned stations.
Therefore there began a test transmission in Kumasi and its environs; and lo and behold in 1995, Mr. Oppong Twumasi (deceased) officially started Oppong Twumasi Electricals Company (OTEC) 102.9FM, making it the 1ST PRIVATE RADIO STATION in the Ashanti Region and Ghana in totality.
The station’s started its transmission from CPC in Kumasi, before it was relocated to its present place at Asawasi, near the Manhyia Palace roundabout.
Garden City Radio 92.1 which was a state owned radio station started its official transmission in 1994 at Asafo in the Subin Constituency of Kumasi.
